PORTLAND, OR - It’s a growing phenomenon – the millions of couples in America who are married and opt NOT to have children. Sometimes referred to as DINK's (Double Income - No Kids), couples who choose to be childless contend with tremendous pressures from family and friends, and face such difficult questions as: How could you be so selfish? How could you be happy without children? Don't you have a 'biological' urge? Who’s going to carry on the family name?

The pressures do not stop with family & friends, as more and more working professionals place the ‘parenting’ issue high on their qualification list for landing a significant other. According to studies and statistics, childfree couples are on the rise. American Demographics Magazine projects that the number of married couples without children will rise by 50%, to more than 31 million, by the year 2010. Several articles have appeared in a Portland newspaper (The Oregonian) that discloses recent US census figures, and recent information on the growing numbers of childless women since 1970.

LauraHS1.jpg (145101 bytes)The public believes many myths about those who decide to remain a family of two. Many couples without children by choice feel like outcasts and are misunderstood. There is extensive information available for couples who have decided to have children, but little advice and insight is available for those who choose not to become parents.

These issues motivated author Laura Carroll to write Families of Two, along with her desire to learn more about successful road maps for a lifelong marriage without children. She and her husband of 12 years have chosen to be childfree, and have dealt with many of the same misconceptions and pressures faced by millions. She has this to say about her book:

"My book is for all of us who have decided not to have children, and I hope that it will help family and friends to better understand why people make this choice. I also want it to serve as a much needed tool for couples who are in the midst of this decision."

Families of Two takes us into the lives of fifteen childfree couples and provides the answers to important questions faced by couples who are deciding whether to have or not have children, and by couples who have already made a childfree choice. These answers are an opportunity for family, friends and the public to gain more insight and understanding of the people in their lives who have chosen not to become parents.

Laura Carroll has become a popular guest on syndicated and morning drive radio shows, and TV talk programs.   She has appeared on network morning shows, and on Friday, November 24th, will appear on 'Men are from Mars - Women are from Venus' Show, hosted by Cybill Shepherd. Also an article on Ms. Carroll and this topic will appear in a December issue of PEOPLE Magazine.

Ms. Carroll is an accomplished speaker, has an extensive background in psychology and human behavior, and is very knowledgeable on the statistics and studies that surround this issue.  Her witty and thought-provoking commentary addresses concerns among a growing segment of our populous, and should prove to be a responsive topic for radio and TV audiences with strong female demographics in the 25 to 40 age bracket.

Families of Two is available on Amazon.com & at fine bookstores everywhere
