Joseph A. Deltito, MD

Dr Joseph Deltito has spent over 20 years in Academic Medicine as a Physician, Forensic Psychiatrist, Professor, Social & Cultural Commentator. Formerly at Brown, Harvard and Cornell Medical Schools, Dr. Deltito currently devotes his time to the clinical treatment of patients in Greenwich, Connecticut, and serves as a full professor at New York Medical College.

Dr. Deltito considers himself to be an informed representative for mainstream medicine, drawing his expertise from treatment methods that are based on research evidence. This includes the side effects of various anti-depressant drugs. His is a factually-based commentator, and his delivery is supported with logic, professionalism and compassion.

Deltito is a renowned research scientist, and has published over 90 articles on topics related to various forms of trauma, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and provided counseling for families and survivors after the 9-11 tragedy.  He is a valuable asset and contributor to working news stories on a variety of topics related to stress, anxiety, trauma, ADD, OCD, and a long list of other mental and psychological disorders. Dr. Deltito is a lively and entertaining speaker who has won awards for his Oratory skills and as a Radio Broadcaster (he is a former a nationally syndicated radio talk show host on the Talk America Radio Networks). His extensive knowledge and on-camera talents have prompted Court TV to utilize him as an expert dozens of times during televised coverage of high profile cases.

Dr. Deltito believes very strongly in the right of all psychiatric patients to receive state-of-the-art treatments, whose effectiveness has been established through rigorous scientific investigation and research. He has been a loud voice against the many charlatans who peddle idiosyncratic unproven treatments to a vulnerable group of people afflicted with psychiatric conditions. He also advocates against health care systems that offer these people less than adequate treatments (HMOs, Managed Care, State Mental Health Organizations). He speaks with authority on all topics related to the appropriateness of Psychiatric diagnoses and their optimal treatment. He has many insights in Societal and Cultural issues as they relate to the public welfare and good, and comments regularly on the psychological dimensions of important current events.

Medical / Educational Background

A native of Brooklyn, New York he received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He then finished an internship in Medicine/Surgery at the Newton-Wellesly Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts before completing a residency in Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard University). Dr Deltito, then promoted to the Harvard Faculty worked for 2 years coordinating an international research project on Panic Disorder while being based at the University of Pisa in Italy. After this he was recruited to establish the Anxiety and Depression Clinic at Cornell University Medical College in New York.

Dr, Deltito has authored over 90 articles on the recognition and treatment of Psychiatric Disorders. He is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in the area of Clinical Psychopharmacology and has served as a consultant to the Eli Lilly Company, Shire Pharmaceuticals, Upjohn Company and Solvay Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Deltito serves as a charter member of the faculty of the Delisio Center for Behavioral Science (Pisa/Carrara, Italy).On two occasions he has held the position of visiting professor of Psychiatry and Psychopharmacology at the Christchurch School of Medicine in New Zealand.

Dr. Deltito lives in Rowayton, Connecticut with his daughter where he is known as an avid fisherman and environmentalist.
