"Every man who reads this book while in his forties will be glad he did when he reaches his sixties. Even at sixty it's not too late."

   --- Dr. Thomas C. Bourne - Psychotherapist

It is a well known fact that men basically do not ask for directions, whether in traffic or on the road. We invariably argue or question why we should ask for help or consult a map when we are sure we can find our destination on our own.

Unfortunately, many of us take the same approach when we experience feelings of frustration, confusion, anger, stress, self-doubt, and depression.  We think we can handle these temporary feelings on our own.  There is no other viewpoint more personally destructive or which leads to as many problems as “This is my problem, and I’m strong enough to handle it myself.”

When Granville Knight reached age fifty-five, he was moving in the right direction, or so he thought.  He owned a very large insurance agency with sixty employees, and had a beautiful wife and three grown children whom he adored. He lived in a nice neighborhood, drove an expensive car, regularly attended church, belonged to a country club, and had a lot of friends. But why was he tired all the time?  He began to examine his life and realized that he was wrong about a number of things such as:

  • He did not have to be in control of everything and everyone all of the time;

  • There is much more to life than power, success or money;

  • He was too self-focused on his own interests and desires;

  • Building his business was not more important than building relationships, and;

  • He was too proud and macho to admit that he was depressed and needed outside help.

In his book, THE MOUNTAINS OF OUR LIVES, Granville Knight, Jr. shares his story along with the stories of other successful and prominent business owners and community leaders, who like him, had put pride, control, career and financial success ahead of all else. Each man who shared his story had to confess that...

  • He was not so strong and powerful as he thought, and occasionally, he needed to ask someone for help and advice,

  • He could learn how to be a better listener & take advice from others,

  • Like everyone else, he had weaknesses and failures,

  • He was not immune from depression and was not his own best therapist,

  • And, things in his life had changed & so had he!
