Hollywood, CA – August 26: Inamed Corporation has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will review their application for silicone gel breast implants October 14th and 15th, 2003. The FDA will consider roughly two years of patient follow-up data, even though scientists and physicans agree that problems begin on an average of seven to ten years post-implantation. Mariel Hemingway, Stevie Nicks and Loretta Lynn are only a few of the women in the entertainment community who admit to removing their silicone breast implants because of related health problems. Breast implant sales continue to soar (up by 50% from 2000 to 2001), and in 2002 alone more than 300,000 women received breast implants of all types – more than ever before. Actor
Mary McDonough (The Waltons), who faced severe health
complications from silicone gel implants, has been an active
voice over the past decade, educating women on the facts and
dangers surrounding breast implants (read
Mary's personal story). Mary felt it was time that
women in and outside of the entertainment industry had a
resource for advice and information on health and body image
issues, which included cosmetic procedures. Recently, McDonough
founded an LA-based support group
In the Know, and will serve as its spokesperson.
In the Know will hold its first meeting on September 5th at 10:30 AM PT, at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. In attendance will be Linda Blair (Exorcist), Leanza Cornett (former Miss America), Actress Christy Houser, Mary McDonough (The Waltons), Sally Kirkland (Bruce Almighty, Days of Our Lives [TV]), Alexandra Paul (Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, Breaking Up Really Sucks), Judy Norton (The Waltons), Leigh Taylor Young (Dallas, Slackers, Soylent Green), Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers film series, How the Grinch Stole Christmas), and numerous others. Additionally, a prominent plastic surgeon will be on-hand to lead discussions and answer medical questions. In the Know supports every woman’s right to choose cosmetic work, but believes women should be better informed and confident that they are getting safe and effective products and procedures.Ms. McDonough is currently scheduling interviews and personal appearances to create public awareness on the issues, and the formation of In the Know.
